Benefits

Not only is peppermint tea delicious, it may also help with:

Digestive Aid

Peppermint tea can help relieve indigestion, bloating, and gas. It can also ease symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as peppermint has antispasmodic properties that help relax the muscles in the digestive tract.

Relieves Nausea

Reduces Headaches The menthol in peppermint tea may help alleviate tension headaches and migraines. Some people find that sipping the tea, or even inhaling the steam, can provide relief from head pain.

Improves Respiratory Function

The menthol in peppermint has decongestant properties that can help open up the airways, making it easier to breathe. It can be helpful for colds, sinusitis, or allergies, providing some relief from congestion.

Promotes Relaxation and Reduces Stress

Peppermint tea has a calming effect, which can help relieve stress and anxiety. It’s also a good option for promoting relaxation before bedtime, as it doesn’t contain caffeine.

Supports Oral Health

Peppermint has natural antimicrobial properties that can help improve oral hygiene. Drinking peppermint tea may contribute to fresh breath and a reduction in bacteria that cause bad breath and gum disease.

Boosts Immune System

Peppermint has antioxidants that can help strengthen the immune system, potentially lowering the risk of infections.

Supports Mental Clarity

Some studies suggest that peppermint can improve focus, mental clarity, and alertness, making it a good choice if you're feeling a little foggy.

Pain Relief

The menthol in peppermint can provide a cooling sensation and pain relief for sore muscles or menstrual cramps. You can drink the tea or even apply a diluted peppermint oil solution topically to affected areas.

Weight Loss

Drinking peppermint tea might help curb appetite, reduce cravings, and support digestion, which may assist with weight management over time.

It’s important to note that while peppermint tea is generally safe for most people, it may not be suitable for those with acid reflux or GERD, as it can relax the lower esophageal sphincter and potentially exacerbate symptoms. As always, if you're unsure, it's a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider.

Instructions

1. Boil fresh water

Start by boiling fresh, filtered water. Fresh water is ideal because it contains more oxygen, which helps bring out the full flavor of the peppermint.

2. Measure the tea

Use about 1 teaspoon of peppermint leaves for every 240 ml (8 oz) of water.

3. Steep the tea

Once the water is boiling, pour it over the peppermint tea leaves in your cup or teapot. Let it steep for 5-10 minutes for a strong, full flavor. If you prefer a milder taste, steep it for 3-5 minutes.

4. Optional Add-ins

Honey or stevia can be added for a touch of sweetness if you prefer it. Alternatively, a squeeze of lemon or a small slice can enhance the flavour and add a refreshing twist.  For extra soothing effects, you can add a little ginger or chamomile to complement the peppermint.

5. Enjoy!

Once steeped to your liking, strain out the leaves. Sip and enjoy the refreshing, calming taste of your peppermint tea!  If you're making a larger batch, just scale up the measurements and steeping time accordingly.
